Accounting Manager Position

Reports To: Director, Finance & Accounting

Location: Remote/home office

Status:  Full-time (40 hrs/week), Regular (M-F availability in any time zone in contiguous U.S.)

Travel:  Infrequent air travel for staff events (1x/year)

POSITION PROFILE

The Accounting Manager is an experienced, skilled accounting professional who is directly responsible for compliant, efficient, and accurate accounting for a national nonprofit.  This role ultimately collaborates with the CFOO, the Director, Finance & Accounting to align with the Organization’s financial strategies to meet business goals through excellent accounting knowledge and operational insight.  This includes guiding staff & stakeholders through changes in accounting processes, recommending & documenting the department’s standard operating procedures and training staff, completing complex & routine accounting tasks, managing the Organization’s accounting systems, providing direct support to staff for day-to-day needs, and directing the daily operations of accounting third party administrators (TPAs) & partners.  

In addition to the required accounting qualifications, the right candidate has strong business communication & customer service skills from years of experience handling non-financial staff & leadership questions.  The Accounting Manager has experience troubleshooting financial system set-ups with users and the vendor(s), and in general possesses both initiative & curiosity to investigate beyond assigned tasks in pursuit of answers to problems.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Manages month-end and year-end closing processes independently including, but not limited to, reviewing & approving balance sheet account and revenue reconciliations by the TPA, and reconciling net assets. 
  • Reviews donation batches, and assists with Advancement staff’s questions on accounting policies related to donations as needed.
  • Approves accounts payable and earned income entries by TPA.
  • Manages financial systems by serving as the primary vendor contact, owning report generation, leading efficient and aligned configuration within each system, and troubleshooting employee user issues in all U.S. time zones.
  • Assists in the annual budgeting process through providing anticipated & scheduled clean data to stakeholders to support informed discussions and templates.  
  • Prepares regular and ad hoc financial reports through leveraging expert NetSuite & Excel skills as directed.  Provides data visualization confidently in alignment with the goal(s) and customizing according to the audience.
  • Manages outsourcing partners by establishing effective meetings, ensuring adherence to service and quality expectations, and advising the Director, Finance & Accounting of status updates & recommendations as needed.
  • Collaborates with team members and external auditors to complete annual audit accurately for public distribution.  Prepares staff FTE form, and calculates and records functional expense allocations for audit.
  • Prepares and oversees relevant TPA on preparing tax schedules, returns and information as needed, including tax planning and compliance (outside of payroll-related) and all required federal, state, local, payroll, property and other applicable taxes.
  • Oversees employee credit card administration by managing corporate credit card account(s) as needed: adds and terminates card holders, prepares credit card agreements, reports a lost or stolen card to financial institutions. Reviews relevant TPA work.
  • Approves vacation & payroll journal entries twice per month.  Assists with payroll administration as needed.
  • Handles certificates of insurance requests from staff and collaboration with insurance broker.
  • Retains and organizes relevant finance/accounting documents associated with execution of duties and in accordance with GAAP.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, or related field.  
  • Minimum of 7 years’ progressive experience performing accounting in a business environment required; at least 2 years’ nonprofit-related experience (audit or internal) required.  
  • 2 years’ experience with financial analysis preferred.
  • 5+ years of experience with different financial software tools, including configuration and related projects.  Fluent software proficiency in NetSuite required;  Divvy experience preferred.
  • 2 years’ experience managing personnel and/or third party administrators, and/or clients in a managing up capacity
  • Detailed/expert knowledge of and experience with using Excel for financial analysis
  • Demonstrated adherence to business ethical standards, and thorough knowledge of GAAP
  • Ability to effectively and professionally communicate with all levels of employees and management, including experience providing training on processes and/or systems that is recommended through references.
  • Excellent planning, organizing, and project management skills to deliver accurate results on time
  • Ability to perform data extraction and manipulation, analyze data, identify inconsistencies, and generate reports.
  • Able to process a high volume of data entry with very little to no mistakes on a daily basis.
