PCA Partner of the Month: Portland Public Schools

04.08.2022

Positive Coaching Alliance is proud to honor Portland Public Schools as our April Partner of the Month. PPS, one of the largest school districts in the Pacific Northwest, serves more than 49,000 students in 81 schools.

With a strong commitment to the well-being of our youth, PPS is renowned for its highly trained teachers and coaches, engaged parent community, strong partnerships, and a focus on closing the racial educational achievement gap. Most recently, Portland Public Schools has seen significant gains in its graduation rate, much of which can be attributed to doubling its college & career readiness offerings and the expansion of the Portland Interscholastic League youth sports program for students from 6th through 12th grade.

The mission of the Portland Interscholastic League is to promote participation and sportsmanship through a competitive interscholastic athletic program. Every athlete is provided with opportunities, positive recognition, and learning experiences that support and maximize their students' academic goals. Athletics utilizes inherently educational experiences to foster lifelong lessons such as teamwork and self-discipline while facilitating the physical and emotional development of the PPS student-athletes.

Marshall Haskins, Director Of Athletics of Portland Public Schools discusses the transformational power of a coach and what it means to young people for the rest of their lives.

Diallo Lewis, Assistant Director of Athletics of Portland Public Schools provides an inspirational perspective on the role of filling emotional tanks for his athletes.
