March PCA Partner of the Month: Spurs Youth Basketball League

Positive Coaching Alliance is proud to honor Spurs Youth Basketball League as our Partner of the Month! Since 2016, PCA has proudly supported Spurs Youth Basketball League (SYBL), helping to train coaches and enhance the youth sports experience. During this time, the SYBL has worked with PCA to conduct 133 workshops, reaching 6,563 coaches across the Austin and San Antonio regions. Additionally, PCA has supported Youth Sports Night for the Austin Spurs, San Antonio’s G-League affiliate, reinforcing its commitment to the local sports community.

In the 2024-25 season alone, SYBL facilitated 16 PCA workshops for coaches at various locations throughout Central Texas. These sessions equipped more than 1,000 coaches with the tools to create a fun, positive, and equitable environment for young athletes.

Faith Williams of Spurs Sports Academy, who helps oversee training for the league, highlighted a memorable moment from a recent workshop in Uvalde. During trainer Jodie McGarity’s session, coaches engaged in a friendly competition that not only energized the room but also fostered camaraderie among them. These interactive elements help humanize the coaching experience, leading to greater participation and satisfaction.

Yolanda Rodgers, Director of Spurs Community Sports, emphasized why the partnership with PCA has thrived for nearly a decade: “We preach about it all the time. If we’re not making our coaches better, our parents better, and our volunteers better, then we’re not making our kids better. Period.”

She continued, “That’s where PCA comes in—providing the resources, training, and energy. PCA helps us build a community from Austin to the Valley. PCA evolves with the times—kids’ needs change, parents’ needs change, and when the pandemic hit, PCA adapted. What’s more, it’s not just the coaches who benefit; often, parents listening in also take away valuable lessons, which helps us strengthen the entire community.”

A key factor in the success of the Spurs Youth Basketball League’s coaching development is the dedication of site directors and the league’s foundational culture. As the Spurs Youth Basketball League website states, the program fosters “teamwork, respect, and self-discipline,” imparting both basketball skills and life lessons to prepare the next generation for success.

Spurs Youth Basketball League Goals:

  • Support basketball programs across local communities and South Texas organizations.
  • Create a safe, positive environment for all participants and volunteers.
  • Ensure all coaches receive comprehensive training, including guidance on promoting respect and fostering positive decision-making among players.

In addition to PCA’s ongoing partnership, the league celebrated a major achievement in 2024. Coach Juanesha “Nesha” Maxfield from Dime Box, Texas, was named the National Jr. NBA/Jr. WNBA Community Coach of the Year. Nominated by the San Antonio Spurs, Coach Nesha was selected from 10 finalists for her outstanding dedication to youth basketball. This prestigious award, presented in partnership with PCA, honors coaches who make a lasting impact, lead with integrity, and shape young lives for success. As part of her recognition, Coach Nesha received a $2,000 grant for her youth basketball organization from the NBA and was honored at a recent Spurs game.

Through partnerships like this, PCA continues to help create a thriving youth basketball ecosystem—one that ensures coaches, players, and parents alike grow together, both on and off the court.
