Leadership and Sportsmanship Summits Bring Rival Schools Together

12.18.2019

The Oxnard Union School District and East Valley League partnered with PCA-LA to create Sportsmanship and Leadership Summits for their student-athletes, bringing competitors and rivals together in the spirit of learning and community pride. CIF Southern Section Commissioner Rob Wigod kicked off the Oxnard Union Sportsmanship Summit hosted by Rio Mesa High School with the importance of education-based student-athletics. CIF LA City Section Commissioner Vicky Lagos led the East Valley League Leadership Summit at James Munroe High School with a message of unity.

Twelve schools all in all participated as PCA-Trainers led by PCA-LA Director of Impact Jeaney Garcia, who took the 400 students through exercises, discussions and cheers all designed to bring the best out of each other on and off the field. Each Summit had two Triple-Impact Competitor Workshops, where students learned to make themselves, their teammates and the game better. The East Valley League Summit was part of PCA-LA’s partnership with the Los Angeles Dodgers Foundation, who is supporting student-athlete programming in 30 Title 1 schools.

“Done right, sports teach us so many positive character traits necessary to succeed in life” says Garcia. “To see these kids who normally compete against each other on the field, collaborate with each other throughout the day was truly inspiring!” Both Oxnard Union and the East Valley League Schools will receive further PCA Programs at individual schools in the new year as these students are now advocates for a positive school culture.
