Featuring Keynote Conversation with Ji’Ayir Brown, Safety for the San Francisco 49ers



This free event is for coaches, parents, health professionals, athletes and any community members interested in the link between sports and medicine. If you’re new to youth sports or have been involved for years, this event is for you! The East Bay Youth Sports Symposium, presented in partnership with Kaiser Permanente, will bring together coaches, athletic directors, and community leaders from across the East Bay to strengthen the region’s youth sports ecosystem. Participants can expect:

  • Interactive workshops led by Kaiser Permanente sports medicine physicians and PCA trainers, offering insights on athlete wellness, injury prevention, and fostering youth sports and character development through sport.
  • Panel discussions featuring local leaders, practitioners, and medical experts advancing equity, safety, and performance in youth sports.
  • Networking opportunities with coaches, mentors, and organizations committed to building access, inclusion, and opportunity through sport.
  • Resource sharing to support coach development, recruitment, and retention across school-based and community programs.

This event is for coaches of all sports, levels, and all age groups.

Together, PCA and Kaiser Permanente are equipping coaches, youth sports leaders, and community members with the knowledge and tools to create safe, inclusive, and positive environments for every young athlete to thrive.

  • Type in “Parking Lot A, CSU East Bay” in your navigation system. All yellow parking lots on the map are free on Saturdays. Lot A is the closest.

Event Workshops

The Science of Staying in the Game
Facilitator: Dr. William Moore
Hear directly from a Kaiser sports medicine physician, who also is a little league coach and CYO basketball coach, who helps cover USA basketball as he breaks down practical, evidence-based strategies to improve throwing mechanics and reduce the risk of ACL injuries in youth athletes. This session will equip coaches, parents, and program leaders with actionable tools to keep athletes healthy, strong, and performing at their best all season long.

Fueling Performance: Body & Mind
Facilitators: Jennifer Jusinski, MS, RDN & Laura Cayan, PsyD
Join a registered dietitian and licensed psychologist for a powerful session on fueling both body and mind. Learn practical nutrition strategies to optimize performance and recovery, alongside tools to support young athletes’ mental wellness in today’s competitive sports environment. Coaches, parents, and program leaders will walk away with easy-to-apply guidance to help athletes build energy, resilience, confidence, and healthy habits, so they can thrive on and off the field.

Are We Creating Champions – or Injured Kids?
Facilitator: Dr. Jeff Wang
This session examines early specialization vs. long-term athlete development through the lens of safety, performance, and equity, featuring a sports medicine physician dedicated to expanding access to high-quality musculoskeletal care so every young athlete can stay healthy and thrive.

Coaching With Empathy
Facilitator: Joe Thomas
Creating a positive, developmental youth sports environment starts with the coach. The interactive, research-based Coaching with Empathy workshop equips coaches with practical tools to build strong relationships, listen deeply, and understand how athletes’ experiences shape how they show up. Through hands-on activities and real-world application, coaches leave ready to create team environments where every young person feels safe, seen, heard, and valued.
