PCA January Partner of the Month: Arizona Cardinals

We are proud to feature the Arizona Cardinals as our Partner of the Month for January. Over the years, the Cardinals have been an advocate for youth sports, championing initiatives that go beyond the game. From supporting the growth of girls flag football to addressing the critical topic of mental health, their partnership with PCA exemplifies what’s possible when organizations unite to create meaningful change. PCA Regional Director, Rich Tomey and Cardinals Director, Community Relations, Horace Raymond share insights into this impactful collaboration and the exciting future ahead.

Q: Can you share the history of the partnership between the Arizona Cardinals and Positive Coaching Alliance (PCA)?

Rich Tomey: The Cardinals have been very supportive since I started working at PCA. We have seen their support over the years grow from underwriting workshops to assistance with PCA events and community donations. With their major two-year commitment in 2024, we’ve expanded to focus on impactful initiatives like mental health and supporting girls flag football, which is one of the fastest-growing sports in the nation. Their continued support of PCA will make a huge impact across the State of Arizona.

Q: How has the partnership contributed to the growth of girls’ flag football?

Horace Raymond: Girls flag football has blossomed nationally and locally. In Arizona, we’ve seen incredible growth since it was sanctioned at the high school level. We’ve gone from 52 teams in the first year to 104 teams last year, with more growth anticipated. The Cardinals have supported this with camps, showcases, and clinics, providing opportunities for players and coaches to elevate the game.

Q: What role does PCA play in these initiatives?

Horace Raymond: PCA is a trusted partner that brings expertise in areas like mental health and character education. Their involvement ensures we’re providing high-quality resources, from coaches’ clinics to workshops for players and parents.

Q: Can you highlight a memorable event from the partnership?

Horace Raymond: One of the standout events was the mental health panel in May. Key participants included Head Coach Jonathan Gannon, starting running back James Conner, the team clinician, and the running backs coach. Moderated by Positive Coaching Alliance (PCA), the discussion provided high school coaches with invaluable insights on leadership, well-being, and more, leaving a lasting impact on all involved.

Q: What challenges are coaches facing, and how are the Cardinals addressing them?

Horace Raymond: Mental health is a key challenge. Understanding each young athlete comes with his or her own unique set of personal circumstances that coaches need to be empathetic to.  Through our partnership, we’re addressing it by offering support and resources. We also aim to elevate all aspects of the game, from coaching to officiating, ensuring a positive experience for everyone involved.

Q: What’s next for the partnership?

Rich Tomey: We’re looking to build on our partnership by expanding our efforts with girls Flag football, involving parents more, and creating workshops to align them with the goals of the players and coaches. This holistic approach will help us continue pushing the game forward. We are excited about the continued growth of our partnership, and we look forward to being a vital resource for the Arizona Cardinals and all of their important community initiatives.
