A Legendary Career: Honoring Jim Perry’s Retirement from Positive Coaching Alliance

After 26 remarkable years of service, Positive Coaching Alliance (PCA) bids a heartfelt farewell to one of its most cherished trainers, Jim Perry. Jim’s extraordinary journey with PCA is not just a testament to his dedication and passion but a celebration of the countless lives he’s touched along the way. As he steps into retirement, we reflect on his incredible legacy and the impact he’s made on youth sports, coaches, parents, and communities across the globe.

A Life Rooted in Leadership and Sportsmanship

Jim Perry’s career began long before his time with PCA. A graduate of the University of Southern California in 1974, where he played basketball for the Trojans, Jim’s love for sports naturally transitioned into teaching, coaching, and athletic administration. Over 48 years in education-based student athletics, Jim has held leadership roles that include Chairman of the National Coaches Council, President of the National Council of Secondary School Athletic Directors, and member of the Building Character Through Sports Task Force for the White House and Congressional Conferences. His accolades reflect his excellence, including inductions into multiple Halls of Fame and recognition as the California State Athletic Director of the Year.

Joining PCA: A Life-Changing Invitation

Jim’s journey with PCA began at a small Mexican diner over lunch with PCA founder Jim Thompson. Inspired by Thompson’s vision, Jim joined the organization at its inception. He recalls PCA’s humble beginnings, delivering workshops with overhead projectors and three-ring binders of transparency sheets. Jim played a pivotal role in expanding PCA’s reach, introducing workshops in Southern California and beyond, including regions like Denver, Dallas, New York, and even internationally in Canada, Singapore, and China.

Impacting Lives Through Positive Coaching

For Jim, PCA has been as much about personal growth as it has been about giving back. “The best part of being a trainer is learning,” he shared. “Over 600 workshops, and I’ve learned something new in every one.” Among his most memorable experiences were workshops in small, underserved communities, including on the Cherokee reservation in Oklahoma and sacred lands of the Chippewa Cree Nation. These moments allowed Jim to immerse himself in local cultures, learn from tribal leaders, and witness firsthand the transformative power of sports.

A Lasting Legacy

Jim’s dedication to creating positive youth sports environments has inspired countless athletes, coaches, and parents. His wisdom, humor, and heartfelt stories resonated with audiences, leaving lasting impressions. He often reflects on the “kids” he coached—now accomplished professionals—who credit their success to lessons learned on the court.

“The ball stops bouncing for everybody; it’s just a matter of when,” Jim reminds us. “Enjoy it and learn from it, because when it stops, it’s time to use those skills in life.”

A Grateful Farewell

As Jim retires, PCA extends its deepest gratitude for his unwavering commitment and service. With 625 workshops conducted, Jim’s influence has reached thousands of athletes, coaches, and parents. He has been more than a trainer; he’s been a mentor, role model, and friend, whose innovative ideas and passionate spirit will continue to inspire the PCA family for years to come.

Jim’s final remarks capture the essence of his journey: “It has truly been an honor to be on the ground floor of PCA and the vision of Jim Thompson. His invitation over lunch in a little Mexican diner was life-changing. I am truly grateful to have been able to take part in PCA’s mission. I will miss these opportunities and experiences deeply.”

Thank You, Jim

Jim, your retirement is richly deserved, but your presence will be deeply missed. Your legacy lives on in the thousands of lives you’ve touched and the communities you’ve helped uplift.

From all of us at PCA: thank you for your dedication, your leadership, and your friendship. We wish you all the best in this next chapter of your life.

With heartfelt appreciation and warmest wishes, The PCA Team
