Title IX 50th Anniversary & Promoting Gender Equity

06.23.2022

In celebration of Title IX's 50th Anniversary, Positive Coaching Alliance, as a part of our Gender Equity Initiative is announcing a number of programs to advance gender equity in youth sports

The initiative focuses on growing the number and equalizing the experiences of girls in athletics, while growing the numbers of women coaches and coaches supporting girls, with an emphasis on girls and women of color.

Programs we are participating in and launching include:

  • A ground-breaking gender equity toolkit, The Game Plan, for coaches, youth sport professionals, and assorted stakeholders providing tips and take-aways on how to create girl-centered programming and how to recruit and retain women coaches, among other gender equity-oriented guidance.
  • A new literature review conducted by top professors and student researchers—a diverse group of active athletes and coaches—regarding best practices to get girls into the game and help them remain in sport for a lifetime of activity and wellness.
  • New Title IX infographics (versions for coaches and youth) co-created with the WNBA.
  • Our Girls in Motion Summit co-hosted with the Alliance for a Healthier Generation (please stay tuned for recaps).
  • An upcoming Girls in the Game professional development session on July 26 at 10 am PT.
  • Ongoing support for the Demand IX campaign.

We look forward to keeping you posted on how you can instill gender equity in your local youth sports program in a school, park, recreation, or third-party sports organization. We know that girls thrive academically, health-wise, and in later employment when they play, and women coaches are highly effective and key to getting girls and kids in the game. We also know girls and women of color are still finding too few opportunities to play and coach but our Gender Equity Initiative is helping to fill these gaps, advancing the conversations, partnering with a wide range of stakeholders, and providing proven tools and resources.
