Sagicor Life Insurance Company Continues Support for PCA-Arizona Triple-Impact Competitor® Scholarship Program

02.25.2020

Scottsdale, Arizona–
February 25, 2020 – Positive Coaching Alliance‐Arizona (PCA-Arizona), the local chapter of the national non‐profit Positive Coaching Alliance that develops “Better Athletes, Better People” through youth and high school sports – is proud to announce Sagicor Life Insurance Company has renewed their support as the presenting partner of the Class of 2019-20 and 2020-21 Triple‐Impact Competitor® Scholarship Awards program in Arizona.

PCA‐Arizona’s program honors area high school student‐athletes who impact sports on three levels by improving oneself, teammates and the game as a whole. Those principles for excellence athletically and in terms of character‐education advance a model of student‐athlete that PCA‐Arizona cultivates in live group workshops and other resources reaching student‐athletes throughout the state of Arizona.

“We are incredibly grateful to Sagicor Life for their continued support in underwriting the Triple-Impact Competitor Scholarships we will present at our Positive Impact Awards event this summer,” said PCA‐Arizona Chapter Executive Director, Rich Tomey. “Sagicor Life’s dedication and commitment to the community has been a big reason why we have seen this program grow over the years. Their support also elevates the human spirit through sports and character‐education by helping us raise the profiles of so many young people doing things the right way.”

Nationally, PCA received over 3,000 applications for the Triple‐Impact Competitor Scholarship from the Class of 2019-20. Each student-athlete submitted an essay explaining how they embody the Triple‐Impact Competitor ideals and three testimonial letters from their coaches, athletic directors, teammates, employers and/or civic/religious leaders. PCA‐Arizona identified 25 finalists, in which 15 scholarships will be awarded later this spring. A full list of finalists can be found here.

“Over the years, I’ve watched these young adults develop into such active contributors, and they inspire me to make what we do matter even more,” said Bart Catmull, President, Sagicor Life Insurance Company. “At Sagicor, we recognize the important role that high school sports play in our local communities. Student‐athletes who participate in sports gain the opportunity to learn valuable lessons that benefit them not only on the playing field, but in every aspect of their lives. We are proud to be a part of the PCA organization across the country and especially support PCA in recognizing student‐athletes who embody the principles of a Triple‐Impact Competitor.”

About Positive Coaching Alliance

Positive Coaching Alliance (PCA) is a national non-profit organization with the mission of creating a positive, character-building youth sports environment that results in BETTER ATHLETES, BETTER PEOPLE.

Youth sports currently involves 40M children, which presents a tremendous platform on which to develop youth character and life skills. Research has shown that in order for youth to accrue these benefits from sports, sports needs to be done in a way that creates a positive youth development culture. PCA ensures sports are ‘done right’ with programming that is research-based and designed to have an impact at three levels in a youth sports organization or school:

  • Youth experience improved life skills and character development.  They also perform better!
  • Coaches become more positive and increase their focus on using sports to teach life lessons.
  • Youth Sports Organizations & Schools see their cultures become more positive and everyone involved has more fun.

Since its founding in 1998, PCA has established 18 chapters nationwide, partnered with roughly 3,500 schools and youth sports organizations to deliver more than 20,000 live group workshops, reaching over 20 million youth. PCA offers interactive online courses and has thousands of multimedia tips and tools for coaches, parents, athletes, and leaders available free of charge on PCADevZone.org. PCA also runs two annual awards programs: a scholarship program for high school student-athletes and a coach award program to recognize youth and high school coaches who strive to win and teach life lessons.

PCA gains support from a National Advisory Board of elite coaches, professional and Olympic athletes, organization leaders, and academics who share PCA’s mission including Cleveland Cavaliers assistant coach, Lindsay Gottlieb and others such as Joe Thomas, Dusty Baker, Carol Dweck, Herm Edwards, Julie Foudy, Phil Jackson, and Steve Kerr. PCA is proud to partner with more than 50 national governing bodies, youth serving organizations and professional leagues and teams including Boys & Girls Club of America, National Basketball Association, Major League Baseball, and US Lacrosse.
