- 08.02.2022 Girls in the Game Recap
We caught up with Game Change It Forward recipient and past Game Changer of the Month, Rashida Ford, and her organization P.O.P. Inc. (past Partner Of The Month) just two weeks into their Summer Freedom School Session.
The P.O.P. CDF Freedom Schools Program affords kids in under-resourced communities the opportunity to grow academically through literacy engagement, develop athletically through competitive play, and advance as community leaders ready to make a difference.
With one key objective of the program to provide a safe space and emotionally enriching environment for kids, Rashida designed the pairing of reading and math with athletics. This program minimizes summer learning loss, which is the lapse in academic skills and knowledge that happens over long breaks in schooling.
While summer learning loss, predominantly literacy-related skills, is a challenge for all children, the gap in the learning cycle that occurs during summer vacation can be many times more prominent for children living in under-resourced communities. Through the Freedom Schools program, Rashida and P.O.P. Inc. are providing kids who would otherwise not have it an opportunity to benefit from a curriculum rich in academics and athletics to ensure they are in the best position possible for the start of school in the fall.
About Game Change It Forward
PCA has identified four game changing coaches who represent an inspirational cross-section of men and women who are actively making a difference in their community. Each coach was awarded $5,000 to help them achieve a specific goal as it relates to improving the lives of the young people they serve, and over the course of the next 12 weeks we will be providing updates on their progress and impact!
