Celebrating PCA's 20th Anniversary With Steve Young

04.30.2018

On April 28th, 2018 we welcomed more than 650 supporters of Positive Coaching Alliance to our annual National Youth Sports Awards & Benefit, honoring Steve Young. The event, hosted at Maples Pavilion, was in celebration of PCA's 20th Anniversary and helped raise critical funds to support BETTER ATHLETES, BETTER PEOPLE.

Overall, PCA raised more than $750,000, which will be instrumental in serving youth athletes in need of positive coaching throughout the country. THANK YOU to all guests that supported PCA for this monumental celebration.

The support over the years has been instrumental in growing this movement from its start at Stanford University in 1998 (the location of this year's event!) to the National Movement it is today.

The event was highlighted, first and foremost, by Steve Young, who received the Ronald L. Jensen Award for Lifetime Achievement. While Steve was certainly the star of the show, this historic night was chock-full of highlights.

Before the event even started, we were honored to have over 40 National Advisory Board Members join us for a pre-event reception. During the reception, PCA was lucky to have Dusty Baker, Lionel Hollins, Lori LindseyLeslie OsborneMeredith Prior (DGC Winner), Charlie Slagle, and Keith Smart join us on Facebook live to share coaching tips with our audience. You can view those clips below:

The event started with Summer Sanders, this year's "Team Captain," or Master of Ceremonies, kicking things off. Summer introduced PCA Founder & CEO Jim Thompson with a tribute from Phil Jackson, which you can see below.

To watch Summer Sanders and Jim Thompson's opening remarks, please watch the video below:

Following Jim's remarks, winners of PCA's premium drawing were announced. Three winners were announced– receiving a meet and greet with Warriors Coach Steve Kerr, a 16-person Giants suite, or a stay in a beautiful home which sleeps 10, in Tahoe. Below you can see a virtual tour of that amazing Tahoe Home. Thanks to all those who entered, and who supported PCA in the process!

Next, National Managing Partner for Deloitte, Ellen Basilico, joined Summer Sanders on stage to discuss Deloitte's support of PCA. You can watch Ellen's remarks below:

After Deloitte, the audience heard from Ken McDonald, Chief Growth Office for TeamSnap, the 2018 sponsor for the Double-Goal Coach® Awards. Ken shared a riveting story about why TeamSnap supports PCA:

Winners of the 2018 Double-Goal Coach® Awards, always a highlight at our National awards, took the stage next. Tawanna Flowers (Basketball, Fort Worth, Texas), David Klein (Baseball, Menlo Park, California), Katie Schlosser (Field Hockey, Brookfield, Wisconsin), and Steve Sills (Football/Track & Field, Homewood, Alabama) represented the award winners on stage, but not before we got a sneak peek into what makes these coaches great with the following four videos:

All 4 winners were then welcomed on stage for a Q&A with Summer Sanders, which you can watch below:

After the coaches panel, the surprise of the evening was Steve Young's announcement of a special fly-away Monday Night Football experience. The 4-person package included flights, hotel, a meal with Steve Young, time on-field pre-game, and top-notch game seats to any 2018-2019 Monday Night Football game. The highest bidder for this live auction package received a signed Steve Young jersey in the crowd– from Steve Young himself!

As the support of PCA continued, the auctioneer showcased the impact of PCA programming at Oak Grove High School. Ed Buller, a long-time high school athletic director, reflected on the impact of PCA programming.

As the auctioneer wrapped up the fund-a-need portion of the evening, PCA was thankful to all who contributed throughout the evening to help build resources to bring PCA programs to all communities and schools, regardless of their ability to pay.

To end the evening, Julie Foudy hosted Steve Young for a Q&A to highlight his lasting impact on youth and high school sports. You can watch that interview below, complete with some of Steve's highlights from his Hall of Fame days as a San Francisco 49er:

Steve Young did not go quietly- as 'Hit me with your best shot' played and Steve Young thew signed footballs into a raucous and supportive crowd.

Thank you to all our generous guests, supporters, and sponsors of the evening. It would not have been possible without you!
