Karen Mukai has a passion for start-ups and teaching. Earning a M.A. in Education, Karen applies her teaching skills to business. She bought a Kumon franchise after seeing how effective the Japanese math and reading program was with her young children. She also established a wedding company to support her family’s tuxedo business and today, that wedding company is a subsidiary of a publicly traded company on the Tokyo Stock Exchange and operated by employees who have learned to work “Hawaii style” in an international environment. Karen is currently the President and Chief Operating Officer of Abilities Unlimited, a 501(c)(3) organization that helps people with disabilities become gainfully employed. Her goal is to apply commercial strategies to establish a successful social enterprise that will make Abilities Unlimited financially sustainable. She serves other missions as a board member of the March of Dimes Hawaii Chapter and Positive Coaching Alliance. Karen resides in Honolulu with her husband, Mel, and their three children, Tiffany, Kelsey and Kevin.
