Bill Frieder coached both Michigan (1980-89) and Arizona State (1989-1997) and led those programs to seven NCAA Tournaments, including a 188-90 record at Michigan and a 132-80 record at Arizona State. He led Michigan to back-to-back Big Ten titles in 1984-85 and 1985-86 and his teams averaged 21 wins in his final six seasons in Ann Arbor, and he promptly led ASU to postseason tournaments in his first six years including the NCAA Tournament in 1991 and 1995. He led ASU to the Sweet 16 in 1995. He earned Associated Press National Coach of the Year in 1985 when Michigan won the Big Ten with a 16-2 mark and a 26-4 record overall and also led Michigan to the 1984 NIT championship. During his tenure at Michigan, Frieder built the 1989 national championship team.
