Karl Costello has been involved in athletics throughout a 38 year career as a teacher, coach and administrator at the secondary school level. He coached high school basketball throughout the Chicago metropolitan area for 20 years (11 as a Head Coach), was employed for over 20 years as a coach, clinician, station-master and Head Camp Coach at the prestigious Five-Star Basketball Camp (Pittsburgh, PA) and was the Director of Athletics at Niles North HS (Central Suburban League) from 2000-2015. During his tenure at Niles North, Karl championed initiatives, partnering with the Positive Coaching Alliance, to educate coaches, parents and student-athletes about the importance of emphasizing the process of learning life lessons daily in practice and competitions. On November 6, 2009, Karl published an article in the Huffington Post titled, "How Sports Can Help End Violence." In 2014, Karl was named a Development Zone Leadership Fellow by Positive Coaching Alliance (PCA) for using high school and youth sports to develop Better Athletes, Better People. Karl is proud of the fact PCA recognized the Vikings Athletic Department for "Honoring The Game" and selected Keiko Sugihara and Carlos Santos as PCA Scholarship Award recipients. Karl retired from his career in education in June of 2015. Karl and his lovely wife, Patricia, (married 34 years) recently relocated to the Phoenix/Scottsdale area.
